FOREST CITY – Waldorf College scored a goal with 23 seconds remaining in the second overtime, giving the Iowa Weslseyan College women’s soccer team a 2-1 loss Saturday afternoon on a damp field on Waldorf’s campus.
Tiffany McNelly scored in the match’s 110th minute and the Tigers dropped their second straight close contest in Midwest Collegiate Conference play. IWC lost to William Penn University on Wednesday by an identical 2-1 score, losing a match which the Tigers dominated possession but were unable to convert on a number of excellent chances.
The two teams were even throughout the match, even scoring the two goals in regulation just 15 seconds apart. After 80:47 of play Waldorf finally scored the first goal when Marcia O’Malia scored unassisted for a 1-0 lead. The lead did not last long, though, as Fanny Koloko-Green (Jr.-Fremont, Calif.) scored shortly after the kickoff, taking just 15 seconds to notch her 10th goal of the season and tie it at 1-1.
The teams went to overtime tied and played through a first 10-minute period without a score. It looked like the second and final 10-minute overtime period would finish the same way, but McNelly scored the winner 9:37 into the overtime, just 23 seconds before the match would have ended in a tie.
Cara Arnold (So.-Davis Junction, Ill.) made five saves in goal for the Tigers. Wesleyan had an 11-8 advantage in shots, including an 8-7 lead in shots on goal. Koloko-Green had four shots while Eleni Nikols (So.-Elmwood Park, Ill.) had two shots before a collision led to her being taken to an area hospital with neck pain. She later was released and returned home to Mount Pleasant with the team.
Koloko-Green scored a goal for her fourth straight match, and the goal was her 10th of the season and tied the school individual single-season record for goals scored. The record was initially set by Jaimee Cushman in 2000 and was tied last year by Jessica Ryan (Jr.-Burlington, Iowa).
IWC now gets set to go on the road to Des Moines on Tuesday to face Grand View University. The match will take place under the lights at 7:30 p.m.
