Iowa Wesleyan Homecoming to offer events for community
Iowa Wesleyan College will celebrate Homecoming on October 16-17. A full line-up of events for students, alumni and community members is planned. New events this year are the family carnival and Alumni/Community Picnic, both to be held on the campus lawn on Saturday.
Highlight of the weekend will be the gathering of reunion classes from the years 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999 and 2004.
In addition, 1971 graduate and basketball standout Dan Kelly will be inducted into the Iowa Wesleyan College Athletic Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place during halftime of the Tiger football game at Evans Field.
Boom Night, planned by the student Homecoming Committee, will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 16, in the Iowa Wesleyan College Chapel. It will feature recognition of senior athletes, performance by the musical group, Inpulse, and the coronation of Homecoming royalty. An All-Reunion Kickoff Reception will be held at the Time Out Sports Bar and Grill beginning at 9 p.m.
On Saturday, October 17, the day kicks off with the Tiger Trot 5K Fun Run/Walk. Registration begins at 7 a.m. with the race beginning at 8 a.m. at the Howe Activity Center. Pre-registration forms are available online at www.iwc.edu under the Alumni and Friends tab. The race is open to all members of the community.
Members of the Iowa Wesleyan College Choir will be serving a pancake breakfast to raise funds for their planned concert tour of Europe next June. The breakfast will be served from 8 – 10 a.m. in the Social Hall; cost is $6.25 for adults, $3.25 for children age 5-12. Children 4 and under eat for free.
Beginning at 9 a.m., the Iowa Wesleyan College Art Gallery will feature the work of local artists as part of the South East Iowa Artist’s Studio Tour, campus tours will be available and the Iowa Wesleyan Book Store will be open. Tours will include the recently-renovated Iowa Wesleyan College Chapel.
The Nursing Division will host an open house at 9:30 a.m. in the Science Hall, room 317.
The parade will leave campus beginning at 10 a.m., travelling south on Broadway to Monroe, across to Main Street then back to campus.
There will be an open house at the Harlan-Lincoln House on campus from 10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. The public is invited to visit this museum free of charge.
The family carnival will open at 10:30 a.m. on the campus lawn. This new event features a variety of games and entertainment for children of all ages. Activities include baseball toss, basketball hoop, relays, sumo wrestling, bounce houses, balloon pop, duck pond, face painting and more. Carnival tickets are 25 cents per game or activity, with unlimited entertainment available with a $5 wrist band.
“We really wanted to create an opportunity for family fun as part of Homecoming this year,” said Erin Jewell, alumni director. “We hope the community will come to campus as well, and be part of the festivities. This is a celebration that we want everyone to join.”
An All-Reunion Alumni/Community Picnic will be held on the campus lawn from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Lunch prices are $6.75 for adults, $3.50 for children age 5-12, and free for children 4 years old and under.
The Tiger football team kick-offs against Quincy University at 1 p.m. at Evans Field at the Mapleleaf Athletic Complex. The Student Union Board will host their annual chili cook-off prior to the game. Iowa Wesleyan alumnus Dan Kelly will be inducted to the Athletic Hall of Fame during half-time ceremonies.
At the football game, $1 of every gate admission will be donated to Henry County veterans for the Veterans Tour to Washington, D.C. World War II veterans will greet people prior to the game. The Henry County Honor Guard will present the colors prior to kick-off.
The Iowa Wesleyan women’s soccer team will host Williams Woods University at 1 p.m. at East Lake Park soccer fields. The men’s game will follow at 3: 00 p.m.
The 5th Quarter Fest All-Alumni Reception will be held from 4-6 p.m. in the Old Gymnasium on North Main Street.
