HANNIBAL, MO. – The Iowa Wesleyan College volleyball team had a productive weekend at the Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) College Dig Pink Classic, toughing out two five-set wins in finishing 3-1 in the tourney held Friday and Saturday.
The Tigers opened with a loss to nationally ranked Carroll (Mont.) College, but finished with three straight wins, including victories in a pair of long matches on Saturday. IWC improved to 13-10 on the season and with the good weekend moved closer to clinching its first winning season since 2005.
Wesleyan dropped its tourney opener against Carroll, ranked 19th nationally in the NAIA. The Saints defeated the Tigers 25-19, 25-12, 25-22, but IWC bounced back in its second match of the day when it defeated Stephens (Mo.) College 25-21, 26-24, 26-24.
IWC then had to work some overtime in both of its matches on Saturday, going five sets with both Central Methodist (Mo.) University and Peru State (Neb.) College. The Tigers came from behind to defeat Central Methodist 18-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-13, 15-9, as Megan McVey (So.-Fort Worth, Texas) had 13 kills and Katie Jammer (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) added 12 kills with just one hitting error.
Wesleyan then finished the tourney with another exciting match, a 25-19, 18-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-10 win over Peru State. McVey had another 15 kills and Kendra Zimmerman (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) had 40 assists.
McVey led IWC with 46 kills in the tourney, while Jammer added 31 kills and 51 digs and was named to the all-tournament team. Katie Leidl (Sr.-Esterhazy, Saskatchewan) led the team with 67 digs, Zimmerman had 143 assists, and Allegra Tennis (Jr.-Madison, Wis.) had 24 blocks in the tourney.
The Tigers have six matches remaining in the regular season plus the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament, and need to win three more matches for the team’s first winning season in five years. IWC returns to MCC play on Wednesday when it hosts William Penn University at 7 p.m. at Ruble Arena.
