MOUNT PLEASANT – Iowa Wesleyan College was held to 132 yards of offense and Quincy (Ill.) University played on a short field much of the day in defeating the Tigers 31-0 in Wesleyan’s Homecoming game Saturday at Mapleleaf Stadium.
The Hawks opened their drives with an average starting position of their own 45-yard line and used it to their advantage to break through with three touchdowns in the second half against an overworked Tiger defense. Quincy got its first win in Mid-States Football Association Midwest League play (2-5 overall, 1-2 MSFA Midwest) while IWC dropped to 2-6 overall, 1-5 in league play.
Quincy’s defense picked up six sacks for 58 yards, in all holding the Tigers to a net of four yards rushing in the game. The Hawks also held Wesleyan to just 63 yards of offense until the Tigers marched down the field late in the fourth quarter, only to see their final chance at scoring end at the Hawks’ two-yard line.
The Hawks scored their first touchdown late in the fourth quarter when Mark Harris caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Dustin Jacoby. Quincy added to the lead in the second quarter when Alex Beard’s 28-yard field goal to made it 10-0.
The scored stayed that way until halftime, but the Hawks added to the lead early in the third quarter. A botched kickoff return and three plays that lost a total of six yards left IWC punting from its own one-yard line, and Quincy then returned a short punt down to the Wesleyan 12-yard line. Two plays later Corey Williams scored from 11 yards out to make it 17-0.
Jacoby added a touchdown running late in the quarter, plunging in on 4th and goal from the one to cap a nine-play, 40-yard drive that made it 24-0. Quincy added one more score midway through the fourth when Lyndsey Diggs caught a short pass, broke a tackle and went 43 yards for a touchdown.
Jaren Maybin (Sr.-Baltimore, Md.) rushed for 59 yards on 16 carries to lead the IWC offense. T.J. Tolliver (Jr.-Bellwood, Ill.) came off the bench to complete seven of 12 passes for 107 yards, while Lawrence Moore (Jr.-Country Club Hills, Ill.) had six catches for 59 yards to lead the receivers.
Chris Owens (Jr.-Greer, S.C.) led the defense with 10 tackles, his second straight game with double-digit tackles. Kris Fleming (Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) and Darious Watson (Jr.-Bellwood, Ill.) both added six tackles each. Defensive tackle Richard Silva (Fr.-Kirkland, Wash.) had his first career interception and Matthew Palmer-Newton (So.-Camarillo, Calif.) had IWC’s lone sack in the game. The IWC defense allowed 351 yards, with 192 of those yards in the first three quarters. Quincy held the ball for more than 33 minutes and was able to keep drives going by making 7 of 17 third down tries, but the Tigers got four fourth-down stops as the Hawks turned the ball over on downs four times.
The Tigers next will face nationally ranked St. Xavier University next Saturday at 1 p.m. in Chicago.
