MOUNT PLEASANT – Brittney Moss (So.-Genoa, Ill.) scored the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute and the Iowa Wesleyan College women’s soccer team defeated William Woods (Mo.) University 2-1 on Saturday in a non-conference match at East Lake Park.
The Tigers snapped a six-match losing streak and at last tied the school single-season record for wins with their seventh win of the season. IWC also defeated William Woods for the first time in school history and improved to 7-8-1 overall this season.
Wesleyan opened the scoring 19:46 into the match when Jennie Mitchell (Sr.-LaGrange, Ga.) scored her fourth goal of the season. The scored stayed that way through halftime until the Owls (1-10 overall) tied it in the 55th minute when Kristen Pelley scored to make it 1-1.
The score remained that way until Moss scored at the 79:10 mark with her fifth goal of the year and what ended up being her first game-winning goal of the season. The unassisted goal stood up and Wesleyan won for the first time since Sept. 26.
Cara Arnold (So.-Davis Junction, Ill.) made three saves to get the win in goal for IWC. Fanny Koloko-Green (Jr.-Fremont, Calif.) had four shots to lead the Tigers, while Mitchell added three shots. Wesleyan outshot the Owls 10-7 in the match and defeated William Woods in five all-time meetings between the two schools.
IWC returns to Midwest Collegiate Conference play on Tuesday when it travels to La Crosse, Wis., to face Viterbo (Wis.) University. Match time is 3 p.m., with the women’s match following the match between the two schools’ men’s teams at 1 p.m.
