MOUNT PLEASANT – Zach Fox scored the only goal of the match with just over two minutes left in the first half and William Woods (Mo.) University defeated Iowa Wesleyan College 1-0 in a men’s soccer match Saturday afternoon at East Lake Park.
The Owls shut out the Tigers in the non-conference match by posting a 6-1 advantage in shots in the first half and then holding off several furious attacks by Wesleyan in the late going. IWC dropped to 5-11 this season, while William Woods is now 6-4-1.
Troy Osborne (So.-Sydney, Australia) made four saves in the match for Wesleyan but was beaten by Fox for the lone goal at the 42:57 mark of the first half. Both teams had a few chances in the second half, including a bicycle kick just off goal by Scott Ballingall (Fr.-Perth, Scotland) and an attempt by the Owls’ Steve Brocks that went over Osborne but was saved from the net by the IWC defense.
Emil Yazdani (Sr.-Buenos Aires, Argentina) led the Tigers with two of the team’s five shots. William Woods outshot Iowa Wesleyan 10-5, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Robert Thibodeaux picked up the shutout win for the Owls, who now have won five of six all-time meetings between the two schools.
IWC gets back into Midwest Collegiate Conference play on Tuesday when it faces Viterbo (Wis.) University in La Crosse, Wis., at 1 p.m.
