Tigers fall behind early, lose to Viterbo 4-2

LA CROSSE, WIS. – Viterbo (Wis.) University scored three times in the first half and the Iowa Wesleyan College men’s soccer team lost to the V-Hawks 4-2 on Tuesday in Midwest Collegiate Conference play at the Viterbo Outdoor Athletics Complex.

The Tigers got a pair of goals in the second half but never were closer than two goals behind after the host V-Hawks built a 3-0 lead in the first 40 minutes of the match. Wesleyan dropped to 5-12 overall, 3-4 in the MCC heading into its regular season finale on Saturday against St. Ambrose University.

Viterbo took the lead just over three minutes into the match when Charlie Grill scored with an assist from Tony Madigan. The V-Hawks added goals in the 24th and 41st minutes as well in building a substantial first half lead.

The Tigers came back in the second half when Levor Henry (Jr.-St. Johns, Antigua) scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Jesus Soto (So.-Rockton, Ill.) to get Iowa Wesleyan on the board at the 57:59 mark.

The V-Hawks stretched the lead back out when Jamie Robertson scored off a pass from Tom Snow to make it 4-1. IWC then scored the final goal of the match in the 71st minute when Michael Roberts (Sr.-St. Johns, Antigua) scored his 13th goal of the year with a penalty kick.

Troy Osborne (So.-Sydney, Australia) made three saves for Wesleyan, which outshot Viterbo 11-10. Josh Lines made four saves to get the win for the V-Hawks. Viterbo stayed in the race for a high seed in the MCC postseason tournament and improved to 9-5-2 overall, 5-1-1 in the conference.

IWC hosts St. Ambrose on Saturday at 3 p.m. at East Lake Park in Mount Pleasant. It will be Senior Day for five Tiger seniors, and the game will also be a part of the Tigers Play for the Cure day promoting breast cancer awareness that will include a silent auction  for a number of items from community businesses and Tiger athletic teams.
