CEDAR RAPIDS – Iowa Wesleyan College won the opening set but Mount Mercy College came back to sweep the next three sets to defeat the Tigers in a Midwest Collegiate Conference volleyball match Wednesday night at the Hennessey Recreation Center.
The Mustangs defeated the Tigers 21-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-19, dropping IWC to 14-11 overall, 3-3 in the MCC. Wesleyan slipped back into a tie for fourth place in the conference with two regular season conference matches to play.
After taking control late in the first set to take a lead in the match, IWC let leads get away in both the second and third sets to fall behind in the match. The Tigers led 20-16 late in the second set before the Mustangs closed with nine of the final 12 points, and then led 15-11 in the third set before the hosts came back to tie at 17-17, setting up for a close finish to the third set.
Megan McVey (So.-Fort Worth, Texas) led the Tigers with 14 kills, while Brittany Janz (Jr.-Tonica, Ill.) and Katie Jammer (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) added nine kills each. Katie Leidl (Sr.-Esterhazy, Saskatchewan) had 29 digs, Kendra Zimmerman (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) had 37 assists, and Allegra Tennis (Jr.-Madison, Wis.) added four blocks.
B.J. Wagy (Jr.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa) also added seven kills and three blocks, including two solo blocks. The two solo blocks put her at 198 for her career, breaking the IWC career record of 197 set by Stacy Ticknor in 1999-2000.
Becca Lampe had 17 kills for the Mustangs, who are now 14-14 overall, 2-4 in the MCC. Brittney Thomas added 14 kills and Beth Ripperger had 31 digs.
Iowa Wesleyan will compete in a triangular at Monmouth College this weekend in Monmouth, Ill. The Tigers will face Principia (Ill.) College at 1 p.m. and then will face Monmouth at 3 p.m.
