Internship Q&A
How does my son/daughter find an internship?
Searching for an internship is very similar to that of a job search. Students should by reflecting upon what kind of internship would be related to their area of study and career interests. Your son or daughter will have the guidance of The Director of Field Experience to assist them in the identification and selection process as well. Internships can be found through online internship/job search web sites or can be developed through direct contact and/or "networking" efforts.
When should my son/daughter start planning for an internship?
Students who are interested in completing an internship may start planning as early as their sophomore year. Depending upon the student's major, the internship may actually be done during the junior or senior year. A majority of students perform their internship during their senior year, or during the summer between the junior and senior year.
Internships can be planned for any time of year or semester, although many students take advantage of the opportunity to do their internship during the summer in their hometown, when they can defray expenses by living at home. The earlier a student begins planning the more likely the internship will be a positive and rewarding one.
What does my son/daughter do to get the process started?
Students should make an appointment to meet with the Director of Field Experience no later than the first semester of their junior year. See our Steps for Arranging Field Experience for guidelines and steps students should follow.
