Mission
In conjunction with Iowa Wesleyan College’s academic vision, “Learning in Community,” the mission of the Teacher Education Program is the education of future teachers through a caring and knowledgeable “Community of Learners.” The “Community of Learners” conceptual framework provides basic knowledge, skills, and dispositions of teaching and learning while encouraging each candidate to develop his or her unique potential for effective, assessment driven teaching, respectful classroom management, and use of technological communication. We encourage the commitment to life-long 39 learning through critical reflection and professional development. This “Community of Learners” includes members from Iowa Wesleyan College, Teacher Education Program, the Professional Community, and the Student Body.

Majors and Programs
Education programs are based on a solid liberal arts background that develops responsible critical thinkers. Education programs provide a respectful understanding of our pluralistic society and the differentiation of youth who will grow and live in that society. Our programs are designed for students who are service-minded, have a holistic commitment to young people, and want to learn the ethics of the science and art of teaching. The Teacher Education Program is centered on a theoretical knowledge base that combines with the Iowa Wesleyan College Life Skills, specialty content area expertise, and a professional core of education-related courses to develop reflective teachers. The IWC Life Skills are communication, problem solving, valuing, and social interaction. Evening students enrolled in the Teacher Education Program follow the same procedures for admissions transfers, and financial aid as do IWC day students. These criteria are described under Student Admissions, Transfer Admissions, and Financial Aid Information catalog sections.

Christamore Family Treatment Center
Brett Brodersen, from Visalia, California, has united his major in Educational Foundations with a sincere interest in helping troubled youth to create a meaningful internship with Christamore Family Treatment Center in Mount Pleasant.
The Christamore Family Treatment Center provides treatment services for at-risk adolescents and their families. These adolescents have experienced delinquent, behavioral, or emotional problems, which require a structured treatment environment.
Brett worked with adolescents to develop skill in anger management, coping skills and relationship building. Brett also demonstrated resourcefulness in conducting research and going beyond what was expected to prepare for classes and field trips.
As a testament to Brett’s fine work, he accepted paid employment with Christamore Family Treatment Center upon the completion on his internship.

Ninth Semester Program
The Iowa Wesleyan College Division of Education can help you be more marketable, and save you money...lots of money! You’re interested in education and you want to prepare yourself to be the very best teacher you can be. A foreign language would be great. More content courses would make you a stronger teacher. And endorsements in reading, special education and/or early childhood are always a good choice.
Can all of this be done in just four years?
Probably not.
The good news is that you may be able to add to your credentials with just one more semester. But can you afford one more semester? With Iowa Wesleyan College’s Ninth-Semester Program, you can!
With the Ninth-Semester Program, Iowa Wesleyan College pays for your student teacher-related or practicum tuition, and all you pay are the direct costs of student teaching and, if applicable, room and board.
You read correctly: no tuition. Costs for your ninth semester could be as low as $1,000—instead of the approximate $11,500 a semester usually costs!
Who is eligible?
To qualify for the Ninth-Semester Program, you must begin your education at Iowa Wesleyan College as a full-time first-year student and you must continue as a full-time student for eight consecutive semesters. You must also be an education major pursuing a degree in elementary or secondary education (including early childhood and K-12 art, music and physical education).
What can you do during your ninth semester?
Complete student teaching or complete the practicum for a second or third teaching endorsement.
The Ninth-Semester Program encourages students to:
- Learn a foreign language (high demand)
- Take more courses in content fields like English, history, math or science
- Obtain additional endorsements such as reading, early childhood or special education
