Students are encouraged to register for academic courses offering an SL component, complete mini projects, travel on immersion trips, and/or fulfill a more expansive project. All service-learning projects must be approved prior to beginning the project by the Director of SL. Service-Learning projects will be reviewed and designated with the appropriate number of units. Faculty members teaching academic courses with an SL component will communicate with the Director to attach the appropriate number of units prior to the beginning of the course. (Exceptions regarding approval for retroactive service may be authorized by the Director on a case-by-case situation. However, if retroactive units are granted by the Director of SL while a student is enrolled at IWC, students will have one month to initiate the necessary academic component from the date in which the service-learning project concluded. If the service is done over the summer, the student will have until September 15 of that year to initiate the academic component.
